STATEMENT

My work generally consists of mixed media sculptural pieces which occupy space in a range of ways. While not strictly an installation artist, the installation element is often integral to my way of working. I’m interested in creating works which lead or direct the viewer, presenting some narrative that unfolds while one travels their paths. I enjoy the challenge of designing site-responsive works for spaces that invite such an approach.  At times, my work may follow evolving or adaptive possibilities. Or the work may seem to envelope or immerse the viewer, requiring physical or visual entry for a complete experience.

Collaborative projects are another part of my exhibition history, to date consisting of a number of works executed through workshop sessions with a variety of groups. I’m also interested in engaging in collaborations with visual artists and other creative people. I find the process of exchange and reciprocation to be full of both risk and reward, of continuous challenge and change. For me, this remains to be the most interesting and sustaining aspect of such efforts.

Finally, my work often exists as some spatially engaged installation assembled of multiple pieces made through time-intensive handmade processes. To this I add free-standing, as well as other more contained assemblages and constructions. Or the work may consist of singular autonomous forms which evidence the same directness of  handmaking found in my overall body of work. And as I work, I’m guided by a near empathetic response that comes through the process of making. It is matched by a direct, yet intuitive connection with materials that has always been part of my artistic practice.
